Lana Del Rey. biography
Born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant on June 21, 1986, in New York City, New York, Lana Del Rey suffered from alcohol dependency at a young age, leading her to a Connecticut boarding school in hopes of kicking the habit and later to Fordham University in New York where she studied philosophy and discovered her musical identity. She began performing in various New York City clubs at the age of 18 before signing with 5 Points Records and releasing her debut album Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant (2010), when she was 20-years-old. Del Rey, feeling as if the record label was shelving her work, later got out of her contract and bought the rights to the album later that year.
In July 2011, Del Rey uploaded her debut single "Video Games" via YouTube for which she gained an immediate following. The video's success soon led to a singing contract with Stranger Records in October with plans to release the single to a larger market. The single resulted in her first Q Award for Next Big Thing later that month and an Ivor Novello for Best Contemporary Song in 2012.
In mid 2012, Del Rey signed a joint contract with Polydor and Interscope Records and jumped right into her second album Born to Die. The album was released internationally on January 31, 2012, topping the charts of eleven countries, selling around 2.8 million copies, remaining at #76 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for over 36 weeks and becoming a best-selling album.
With the help of British pop star Cheryl Cole, Del Rey composed her third studio album A Million Lights in May 2012, featuring the hit single "Ghetto Baby," before releasing it on June 15. Also around this time, Del Rey announced that she was working on her next EP, Paradise Edition of Born to Die, along with the singles "Will You Still Love Me When I'm No Longer Young and Beautiful" and "In the Land of Gods and Monsters." The album was officially released on November 12, 2012.
Most recently, Del Rey became the face of the new Jaguar F-Type at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, began modeling and recording a cover for H&M's 2012 Autumn and Winter campaign, announced her European tour stops - including Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Russia - and earned two music award nominations for Best Push and Best New Act while winning Best Alternative at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards.
